BELLYDOST

BELLYDOST is a dual-action antispasmodic and anti-flatulence suspension combining an anticholinergic antispasmodic with a defoaming agent to address the two primary components of infantile colic and gastrointestinal spasm — smooth muscle hypermotility and gas trapping.

Dicyclomine Hydrochloride (10mg per 5mL) is a tertiary amine anticholinergic that competitively blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors on intestinal smooth muscle cells. Acetylcholine stimulates M3 muscarinic receptors in the GI tract, causing smooth muscle contraction and increasing intestinal motility. Dicyclomine's competitive receptor blockade reduces this cholinergic stimulation, producing antispasmodic relaxation of intestinal smooth muscle — relieving the colonic hypermotility responsible for cramping abdominal pain in irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, and gastrointestinal spasm. Dicyclomine also has a direct musculotropic effect on smooth muscle independent of the anticholinergic mechanism, providing more complete antispasmodic activity than pure anticholinergics.

Simethicone (40mg per 5mL) is a polydimethylsiloxane anti-foaming agent that reduces the surface tension of intestinal gas bubbles, causing them to coalesce into larger bubbles that are more easily expelled by peristalsis. This mechanical defoaming action directly relieves bloating, flatulence, and the abdominal distension caused by gas accumulation — the second major driver of colic-type abdominal pain alongside smooth muscle spasm.

Infantile Colic (Primary Indication): The most common indication for dicyclomine-simethicone suspension. Infantile colic — defined as episodes of inconsolable crying for more than 3 hours per day in otherwise healthy infants — is attributed to intestinal smooth muscle spasm and gas trapping. Dicyclomine's antispasmodic action reduces colonic smooth muscle hypertonicity while simethicone eliminates the trapped gas bubbles that cause painful distension.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Abdominal cramping, bloating, and flatulence associated with IBS — dicyclomine reduces the hypermotility and simethicone eliminates the associated gas accumulation.

Functional Abdominal Pain: Post-meal cramping and pain in adults and older children where combined antispasmodic and anti-flatulence effects are required.

Diverticular Disease: Symptomatic colonic spasm associated with diverticulosis — dicyclomine relieves the painful colonic contractions.

Gastroenteritis-Associated Colic: Abdominal cramping and flatulence during and after acute gastroenteritis — the suspension format enables paediatric administration.
