Mechanism of Action
Lactulose is a synthetic sugar that is not digested by the small intestine. It passes to the colon where bacteria ferment it, producing acids that draw water into the bowel and soften stool. It also reduces ammonia absorption in hepatic encephalopathy.
Indications
Constipation, hepatic encephalopathy (ammonia reduction), chronic constipation in elderly and children.
